Wedding songs 2020: The best of

Last Updated on: 21 March 2025

The songs to remember of the year 2020

Dear friends of ProfessionalWeddingDJ, the new year has just begun, and the best of 2020 wedding music was awaited by many of you (here you can read the one of 2019, which sums up the decade). Also in this year, difficult for many, and certainly different, we wanted to dedicate some time to retrace “the soundtrack of 2020” with you.

We do it, as always, with special attention to the music that we at ProfessionalWeddingDJ played the most, giving you some tips for the playlist of your most beautiful day.

2020 BEST SONGS TO DANCE AT YOUR WEDDING PARTY

During the lockdown, when dancing parties were prohibited, and discos were not open to the public, a lot of floorfillers came out. Keep them in mind when we’ll be back to dance !

Let’s start with “In My Arms” by Purple Disco Machine, “Tequila” by Jax Jones and “Madan”, by Haska and Salif Keita (remake of the 2003 version, which was a huge success!).

For the more club addicted spouses, then, we must absolutely point out Fisher’s “Freaks”, which, honestly, never disappoints! Besides, Fisher is a guaranteed “brand”!  We recommended Losing it, in the previous season, always by popular demand, especially in international weddings: it was requested at least four times during an American wedding celebrated on Lake Como! And we gladly played it.  As you can imagine, there are several musical cues; to tell the truth, some Italian music is missing, but this is not a period during which Italian artists are producing particularly exciting pieces.

We also want to mention some captivating pop pieces: “Supalonely” by Benee, “Physical” by Dua Lipa and three Lady Gaga’s songs: “Stupid Love”, “911” and “Rain on me” in a duet with Ariana Grande. Rain On Me was also remixed by Purple Disco Machine, a really important presence of 2020: in addition to the mentioned “In My Arms”, also “Hypnotized”, the very recent “Exotica” (with a very 80s” sound) and the remix of “On My Mind” by Diplo & Sidepiece.

On the R&B side, there was the very welcome return of Drake, after a two-year absence from the album Scorpion. The new “Laugh Now Cry Later”, with the typical black sound of the Canadian rapper, reintroduced some groove in this 2020: we really needed it.

We also appreciated Jason Derulo’s “Savage Love” (in collaboration with Jawsh 685) and Justin Timberlake’s “The Other Side”.

THE SMASHING HITS OF 2020 WEDDINGS

And the smashing hits of 2020? For sure “Jerusalema” of Master KG, a song great for a wedding dance or a nice flash mob (we have already tested it in a wedding party in early August, respecting all the rules of course!).

For the romantic (but not too much) moments of your wedding party we recommend “Souvenir” by Selena Gomez: it has romantic text and quick rhythm, not exactly suitable for a slow one… We definitely will find the most appropriate moment for playing this track during your party!

2020 ROMANTIC SONGS FOR THE FIRST DANCE AND FOR THE CAKE CUTTING

“No, I can’t sleep until I feel your touch” is one of the most romantic lyrics of this year, played by The Weeknd in the beautiful and award-winning “Blinding Lights”. While in “Level of concern” Twenty one pilots sing about love and quarantine.

Straight from the night of the 2020 Oscars (even though it won no prize) a track from the movie Breakthrough: “I’m Standing With You” by Chrissy Metz. The romantic atmosphere makes the song perfect for the first dance. It will certainly be requested in international weddings.

On the Italian side, the Sanremo 2020 festival (the most important music show in Italy) offered some interesting ideas, especially thanks to the guests and duets. We we want to highlight Raphael Gualazzi, with Carioca (beautiful rhythm in Brazilian style) and his cover with a jazz arrangement, of the song “E se domani” (originally performed by Mina), in duet with the talented Simona Molinari. Thanks to the refined atmospheres it is perfect for a classy wedding party. How about inserting it in a jazz background during the dinner?

“Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen is certainly not a novelty, but an absolute classic, used by many spouses during the ceremony. This time, however, we propose it again in a version performed by the great tenor Andrea Bocelli and his sweet little daughter Virginia for a magical evening, a truly evocative Christmas concert, from the Teatro Regio di Parma entitled “Believe in Christmas”.

And let’s finish with a last minute treat: released in december, “Afterglow” is the latest single by Ed Sheeran, after the stop taken by the artist for the birth of his first daughter, already a youtube trend topic and certainly a trend topic for the upcoming ProfessionalWeddingDJ wedding parties.

The singer has put a lot of himself into this intimate work and the cover is designed by Ed Sheeran himself.

And we end these article by quoting some sweet words from Afterglow

We were love-drunk, waiting on a miracle
Tryna find ourselves in the winter snow
So alone in love like the world had disappeared
Oh, I won’t be silent and I won’t let go
I will hold on tighter ’til the afterglow
And we’ll burn so bright ’til the darkness softly clears

From the 2020 VMA… to your wedding!

MTV Video Music Awards: some inspirations for you

The summer is about to end, and, to recap the situation as regards music, here are the MTV Video Music Awards, in this very special edition, conducted by actress and singer Keke Palmer and dedicated to Chadwick Boseman, the actor died a few days ago at just 43 years old.

Thanks to the Corona Virus emergency, which also in America is giving many thoughts, it was decided not to opt for an indoor location (initially the Barclays Center in Brooklyn was chosen) but for different outdoor places scattered around the city: in short, as they say today, a “widespread” event.

The Weeknd with Blinding Lights won the main prize: best video. And, with the same song, he won the statuette for the Best R&B song. Well, we at ProfessionalWeddingDJ (see here our post about the 2018 edition) are obviously very satisfied about this success, considering, often, the songs of the Canadian artist are playd by our DJs during weddings. The Weeknd’s music in particular is suitable for the “soft” moments, or a little more rhythmic … (but not too much: floorfiller songs are… others).

The other coveted “artist of the year” award of the 2020 edition of the MTV Video Music Awards was won by Lady Gaga, who, moreover, was not “satisfied” with this award: in total, she even deserved five; the two most important are “Best Song”, shared with Ariana Grande, for the song Rain on Me, which also allowed her to win the title of best collaboration of 2020 (obviously, the couple Gaga-Grande, it works!). Lady Gaga was in great shape for the event, and as always, she was on trend using “tech” masks that showed the light waveform of the music (but the really positive note is that the mask didn’t take it off. throughout the evening, set a good example for everyone).

Other awards also include Taylor Swift‘s video (best director) for The Man, and Doja Cat was elected best debut artist; the Korean BTS won four awards including Best K-Pop and Best Group.

Amazing was the performance on stage of the Black Eyed Peas, who proposed their new single, Vida loca. No prizes, however, for them, like Dua Lipa (despite the two very strong singles Don’t Start Now and Physical) and Billie Ellish. The fact remains that, in particular the Albanian singer, is very welcome at wedding parties, and not only by the very young party addicted: the sound, in fact, for the two pieces we referred to, are pleasantly “old style” (70s and 80s).

Finally, a curiosity: this year, thanks to the quarantine imposed by the pandemic, a new category has been added, the Best Music Video shot from home, which went to Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande for Stuck with U.

Some romantic songs straight from Los Angeles (2020 Oscars)

The 92nd edition of the Oscar awards has just ended; as always, it was held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, and was broadcast live in the United States by ABC. An event that influences, for sure, the film market, and also greatly conditions the musical aspect: often, after the Oscar, the songs of the soundtracks that get some awards the event, have a peak of requests and visibility. First, however, two words about the winner: the most awarded film was Parasite, with four golden statues assigned (included the “best movie” award).

And the winner is….

But let’s immediately talk about music: the prize awarded for the best song has nothing to do with the winning film. The ‘Best Original Song’ of the 2020 Oscar is ( I’m gonna) Love Me Again, played in the movie Rocketman by Taron Egerton (this song has already been awarded the “Best Original Song” at the Globe Awards).

For a special first dance

A very romantic song, “I’m Standing With You”, played by Chrissy Metz, in the film Breakthrough, did not go beyond the nomination. The text and the atmospheres are very romantic, and for the first dance it would be perfect: after the showcase of the Oscars, it will undoubtedly be among the songs that you will ask for more (in particular, it will be popular in international weddings).

Here is a step:

Through whatever you go through

I’m standing with you

And wherever you go to (You go to), I’ll stand beside you

And when you think that all the odds are all against you

Also noteworthy is “Into the Unknown” by Idina Aurora Menzel, taken from the soundtrack of Frozen II, in this beautiful instrumental version, perfect for the bride and groom entry!

It has a nice moment “in crescendo” at minute 1 and 3 seconds, which makes everything more “solemn” and dynamic (the prelude of the song, instead, is very soft).

The Oscar for the best soundtrack (not therefore the single song, but the “global” soundtrack of the film) goes to Hildur Guðnadóttir, author of the music for Joker. The other nominees are:

Thomas Newman – 1917

Randy Newman – Marriage Story

Alexandre Desplat – Little Women

John Williams – Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

HERE ARE TWO SLOW SONGS WITH COMPROMISING LYRICS: SHOCKED FACES ARE GUARANTEED, WATCH OUT!

Songs we refer to as “fake friends“, are those that from first take would seem perfect for romantic moments during your wedding party, but in reality… have lyrics that are actually the opposite of what the sweet vibe and soothing voice of the singer would have you imagine. We’d like to mention two pieces in particular.

Fortunately, I was able to “nip in the bud” a bride’s attempt at including Numb performed by Dotan… let’s talk about it right here: “Numb” is Dotan’s new single, a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter and Dutch producer of Israeli origin. We are talking about insensitivity, certainly not a topic for a first dance!

‘Cause I feel numb

So infected with your bad blood, bad blood

Keep on running ’til it blows up, blows up

All I wanted was a real love

But I feel numb

Even Sam Smith, whom we’ve come to know with Stay with Me, a great piece from 2014, is featured on this list of “fake friends” with To Die For: the lyrics are very pessimistic: As my world is collapsing around me, I just want someone to die for are not exactly positive lines to go with the celebration of love, which must undoubtedly be the essence of positivity.

I don’t wanna be alone

I look for you

Every day, every night

Sunshine livin’ on a perfect day

While my world’s crashing down

I just want somebody to die for

An Italian event well known abroad

The Sanremo’s festival is an evergreen event in Italy (the one just ended was the seventieth edition), also appreciated in the rest of the world. We at Professionalweddingdj watched it on television for trying to find something good to add in our DJ bag, for your wedding. And, even in this 2020 edition, there are many songs to save.

For example, we really liked  Raphael Gualazzi  with Carioca (nice rhythm in Brazilian style ) and his cover of the piece of Mina “E se domani“ (dated 1964) played with the talented Simona Molinari:  jazz atmospheres that can make the difference even in elegant wedding parties, maybe at dinner…

We also appreciated Diodato (the winner of the 70th edition of Sanremo), especially during the duet with Nina Zilli, who proposed an elegant, refined and engaging cover version of “24.000 baci” (an old Adriano Celentano’s song). Well, the “queen” Nina Zilli (the name, Nina, is a tribute to Nina Simone!) evidently, made the difference again. On many occasions we put some of hes pieces, especially at the aperitif: listen to this “50.000” with Giuliano Palma.

We also report some interesting contributions among the international guests: Lewis Capaldi sang “Before You Go, Someone You Loved”. A romantic song, which some spouses have already asked me to use for cutting the cake, but … be careful! In fact, I warned them of the meaning, not entirely suitable for a couple who has just promised themselves eternal love. A short step makes it clear that it speaks of a finished love story:

I was getting kinda used to being someone you loved

Another guest was Tiziano Ferro, who performed many pieces, including “Sere nere” (Tiziano Ferro is is a singer very appreciated in Italy and abroad, especially in Latin America, Spain and elsewhere). Mika, who performed in Sanremo “Dear Jealousy”, “Happy Ending”, “Amore che vieni, amore che vai” is an artist loved by our spouses: from the song “Grace Kelly” (2006) to Ice Cream (this song dates back to last summer).

Finally, let’s talk about Dua Lipa, a special international guest who made the theater dance (and also the whole audience from home), with “Don’t Start Now”, which we still often play today at wedding parties, when it is time to dance. The ’70’s sound have a lot of connection with pieces from the past, which makes this single … timeless, as well as very “versatile”: in short, easy to find it in “Professionalweddingdj” wedding parties   .
